About the Programme
The European Master on Medical Image Analysis (MAIA) is a two-year, full-time international master programme (120 ECTS), coordinated by the University of Girona (UdG, Spain) and jointly delivered with Université de Bourgogne Europe (UBE, France) and the Università degli studi di Cassino e del Lazio Meridionale (UniCas, Italy). MAIA aims to educate the next generation of experts in medical imaging, artificial intelligence and learning-based medical robotics, combining advanced technical training with clinical relevance, regulatory awareness and methodological rigour within a coherent European framework.
Programme Curriculum
The programme provides a solid foundation in medical imaging physics, programming, classical image processing, machine learning, deep learning and robotic perception, complemented by training in validation strategies, uncertainty management and common methodological pitfalls in medical AI. Particular emphasis is placed on trustworthy and responsible AI, including ethical considerations, explainability, risk management, and the regulatory frameworks governing AI in healthcare, such as the EU Artificial Intelligence Act and the Medical Device Regulation.
In the second year, the curriculum advances towards state-of-the-art and emerging topics, including multimodal and longitudinal medical imaging analysis, self-supervised and foundation models, image-guided interventions, and the evaluation and validation of medical AI systems, providing exposure to AI-enabled robotic tools integrated into clinical workflows.
Programme Structure & Mobility
Learning Methodology
MAIA follows a strong learning-by-doing approach implemented through hands-on courses, project-based assessments, winter schools, and a 24-ECTS Master’s thesis carried out in academic, clinical or industrial environments. Transversal competences, such as scientific critical thinking, professional and regulatory awareness, responsible deployment of AI systems, and career development, are developed throughout the programme, enabling graduates to translate research results into safe, effective and socially responsible healthcare solutions.
International Experience & Career Opportunities
Through its joint structure, mandatory mobility and strong integration within the European higher education, research and innovation ecosystem, MAIA offers a distinctive international learning experience. The programme equips graduates for careers in research, industry, and healthcare technology, while contributing to European excellence and innovation in medical imaging, artificial intelligence and robotics, and to the development of more effective, trustworthy, and patient-centred healthcare systems in Europe and beyond.
